As I watched the Channel 6 News the other night Vinalhaven, Maine came up. The topic was about Vinalhaven being fully converted to wind power. There are three wind turbines put up. This will power enough electricity for all the year round residents of Vinalhaven. 1500 people live on this island and only 3 wind turbines will power electricity for all those residents. " 'I think it's a wonderful project," said Hazel Smith, whose property lies close to the construction site. "I've always loved the windmills. It's cheaper power; and to me, they're peaceful. Everybody came together for this. Everyone is looking forward to it.' "

Personally I would love to have Windmills run Barter's Island. My home community. It would work as well. The problem is cooperation of people who don't want to change their way of life. If people realized how much money they would save it may spark their interest a little more.
In the meantime we can find ways to reduce our CARBON FOOTPRINT. We can power our homes with wind, water, or sun. I think also, the more people push for alternative energy, the more the government will listen... I mean this is a democratic nation right? If the govt. would set up a plan to provide loans to put in alternative energy in homes and when people start saving money they can pay the state back, it would provide a way for everyone to convert. The people and government just need to cooperate and work together. Everybody wants the earth to survive and if it comes down to cooperating or dying... I would hope people would choose to cooperate.

It sounds like we could power the whole region of Boothbay with just 3 or 4 turbines, however during the summer we would need to have several more. Maybe we should look into it! Good post Emily!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gabby!
ReplyDeletei'm surprised you don't want to argue with me.
hahah. XP
Well I don't believe that Boothbay should use alternative energy or Vinalhaven.... haha just kidding!
ReplyDeleteThose are really good points. I don't think people have been informed enough on this subject and I'm sure it would make a difference if they did! Hopefully it would, because it sounds like a great start. Good post!
ReplyDeleteI have also heard about the windmills on Vinalhaven, and that island is bigger than Barter's Island as well as Southport! Therefore, it would only take a couple to power our islands here. But the price plays a HUGE role in if this dream can become reality. They are expensive, and I think why some people are against putting them up is because of their intial cost. They are not thinking about how much we will save, they are thinking about how much more money they will have to give the government. So we need to find a way to make that big number smaller so that it seems more reasonable to the public.
